Types Of Video Games

Video games are sorted into many categories depending on the content. Going by that rule, many games fit into multiple categories. Nevertheless, we can understand the type of almost all games, by a description of the type, which they closely match. Here, a list of the popular game categories is given. However, there are still more games out there which do not fall into this listing.
Action (First Person Shooting):
This is by far one of the most popular computer games. The player acts as a character and he looks either through the character’s eyes or over his shoulder. The player/character moves through a series of obstacles, killing or avoiding enemies and over to the next level. The games generally have a time limit to complete a task and may lose a life or fail the level if the objective can not achieved within the time limit. The settings for the games vary from historical wars to fantasy universe wars.
Action games can further be classified as Stealth Games. While enemies are killed in Action games, Stealth Games require that enemies should be avoided or if necessary killed without attracting attention.
Driving Games:
Racing and driving games are another popular type of games. Both Motor Bike racing and Car racing games are available. The player gets to drive and has to compete against other drivers. Circuits as in reality racing, modification and choosing of vehicles are some of the specialties of this type of game.
Role Playing Game:
This is more or less like the First Person Shooting game. However, unlike the first person game, the game may be played as long as the story line is completed.
Fighting Games:
As the name suggests the player gets to play a character, which fights with other computer controlled, or player controlled characters. The aim is to win as in all types of games.
Strategy Games:
This is a mix and match of FPS (First Person Shooting) and RPG (Role Playing Game). The majority of games in this type are war games.
Sports Games:
Players get to play group sports like rugby and basketball or single participant games like skate boarding. Players may get to control the team as a whole or a single character that is on the field.
Simulation Games:
As the name suggests, this is simulating, for instance, piloting an airplane, building a city etc.
Puzzle Games.
This type of games requires more of the brain than brawn. It requires a level of thinking and understanding to solve the puzzles.
Casual Games:
This type of games is for those people who are not serious gamers. It has no story or strategy and when one has time to kill, these games are played. Cell phone games are categorized into this list.
Platform Games:
Games where the player has to jump on to or from suspended platforms or obstacles can be termed as platform games.
Multiplayer Games:
Where two or more players play a game simultaneously, competing against each other or playing as a team to achieve a goal is called multiplayer gaming.

Who Plays Video Games?

With the great number of video games for sale and the huge variety of video games that are downloadable through the internet, it probably will not surprise you to learn that 60 percent of the American population has played some kind of video game. They are rivalling baseball as the great American pastime. Indeed, there are versions of baseball and NFL available as video games. Video games grew out of our fascination with computers and they are played by young and old alike. Video game playing is not limited to kids and teenagers, although children are starting to play video games at younger and more tender ages.

Nearly half of all American children aged 4 to 6 are estimated to have played video games, and a new market has sprung up to develop video games to involve toddlers and make computers more attractive for them to use. More attractive to children! Kids take to computers better than ducks to water, and stay connected for life. As of 2005, a quarter of the children in the aged four to six age group who have played computer games say it is a regular habit. The toddler, of course, cannot yet talk about their video game habits. But their parents report that children, especially boys have lost interest in playing with their traditional toys like action figures, Legos, and puzzles and prefer video games. However, kids are not the primary users of video games. Their parents played video games as children and teenagers.
We are now experiencing the phenomenon of second-generation video game players. Video games have been around since the 1970’s, clearly enough time for some third generation players to come upon the scene. Side to side, mouse to mouse with the kids are the adults who have never stopped playing or who began playing as adults. Adults represent the largest group of video game players and the average age of video gamers is 29. Certainly, the older generation has the good sense to avoid this costly, time consuming habit, you may think. Think again - 17 percent of gamers are 50 years of age and older. If this keeps up, retirement communities are no longer able to offer Bingo and Cribbage as recreational bonuses. The baby boom generation will head into its twilight years amid Dungeons and Dragons competitions.
The joy of mindlessly zoning out in virtual reality instead of actually doing something or speaking to someone is so compelling that video games are now a multibillion-dollar business. The video game companies often rival the stock exchange earnings of energy corporations and pharmaceutical companies. Nintendo often beats the earnings of major Hollywood studios. In 2004, 9.9 billion dollars was spent on video games, on consoles like PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, and on hand-held systems like Game Boy and Nintendo DS in the U.S. alone. Of course, America is the leader in video game retail but the rest of the world is far behind, making video game stocks a hot commodity. But no one is interested in "playing “ the stock market anymore; they’re all to busy playing video games.

Video Games And The Family

Video games offer all sorts of interesting things to children. But, they are not just for kids. Anyone can get into a video game when they take a few minutes to learn how to. There is a lot to know about them though before purchasing and allowing children to play them. It is important to know what you are buying and what is on the video before giving it to your child. As responsible parents, we all want to please our child but we know that it is more important that we make sure the environment they are exposed to is more important.
Video games have all sorts of options available to kids. From the time they are toddlers, kids love videos. It starts with cartoons and their favorite videos. Then, they move to learning how to play games on basic video consoles. The video then becomes a habit. If we do not regulate it, we will have problems. Nevertheless, some video games are educational. There are new consoles out that promote learning through a basic game. It is easy to see the educational benefits of these games as long as the child is not playing them day and night.
This is the next important concept that parents need to realize. From young children to older ones, we need to regulate the time that children play videos. If we let them come home from school and sit in front of the television for hours on end, they lose quite a bit. They are missing time playing with other kids. They are missing the physical activity that they all need. Kids need to have many activities to do not just video games.
When we do provide them with videos to play it is important that we know what they are playing. Some video games contain graphic and sexual images that are simply inappropriate. Killing, beating, stealing, raping, and lying are all things that we need to avoid allowing our children to come in contact with in the video games.
It is fine to allow children to play video games. They can even be educational, but we need to regulate what they watch and how much they watch in order to be effective parents. It is essential to their well being.

Generally known as PC games, personal computer games are video games played on personal computer. This brings a feeling of enchantment to the gamer. Also known as video game, this is entirely different from the games played on a video game console. The production of video games involves one or more game developers along with specialists. Most often these games are distributed through DVDs and CDs or through online delivery services such as Direct2Drive and Stream. Generally, the user may require a specialized hardware in the personal computer to play the personal computer games. Even though there are criticisms from various corners regarding the game addiction and its impact on minors, the market of games is growing day by day. Spacewar! by PDP-1 is considered as the first ever computer game which got released in 1961. It consisted of two player-controlled spaceships maneuvering around a central star, fighting each other. The first generation of PC games came with text adventures or interactive fiction. By the middle of eighties, the popularity of personal computers increased and this led to the use of graphics as an important factor. The video game market suffered a major crash in the beginning of eighties because of the flooding of the poor-quality games into the market. Big names including Atari recorded losses in the crash. Video Games And Children Are Not Made To Be ‘Always’ Together

Many people think that video games and children are made for each other. As a result they never keep a check on their kids spending hours with these play machines. Though the ardent reality is children should not be always glued to the video games.
Whenever, it comes on terms with video games and children, a very controversial matter regarding effects of videogames on children pops up. In fact there have been more than 200 studies and reports which have examined some direct effects of video games on the minds of children.
Let us take a closer look at what these reports have to say and what exactly are the effects of video games on children.
Many organizations, parent groups, psychologists and even religious groups have pointed out one major flaw of video games—the inherent violence of action packed games. They say that inclusion of violence in video games has a drastic effect on the overall personality and attitude of children. There are 5 major effects which have been pointed out by psychologists. These are increased aggressive thoughts, aggressive behavior, and aggressive personality, decreased helping behavior and increased psychological arousal.
The children start identifying themselves with the role of an aggressor. After playing first person shooter games, children become the character of the game and they start seeing the world through the eyes of the game’s character. Moreover the video games introduce to the naïve minds of the children the concept of gun usage. These games ask the children to kill the enemies in the game. As children are the characters of the game, they become emotionally involved in the game. They start enjoying the killing process in the game as it leads them to the next level.
As a result of identifying the role of aggressor with themselves children start developing positive attitude towards violence and its usage. They also start assuming that the other people would act aggressively to them as in the video games and they get themselves ready for aggressive repulsion. To add to the misery, children start believing that violent methods and techniques can solve their problems and quandaries of life and thus a positive notion for usage of violence is developed in them.
The children start to enjoy and participate more frequently in violent video games. As they play these games, they start off practicing the usage of violence in the real world as well. They even start noticing the violent aspects of games which could be brought into the real life.
As a result of this active violence participation, the children start developing a total disregard for social norms, law and the lives of others. They start seeing the world as an unsafe, violent place, where usage of violence is inevitable. They start fighting and acting aggressively with other children, and in some cases, even with their parents.
Coming on to a real bad repercussion of video gaming, playing them constantly can certainly lead kids to video game addiction. A majority of children playing video games show decreased interest in the outdoor activities, TV and social interactions. As the nature of the game demands aggressive performance by the players, children keep on reinforcing that aggression by constantly playing the game till they achieve the required aggressive effect needed in the game.
All the more, children become more interested and fascinated as they use guns, bombs and see explosions, bloodshed and mayhem in the game. As a result of prolonged violent interaction with the game, the personalities of children become highly aggressive and aggression becomes their trait. They start cutting themselves from school, parents and friends and remain busy with their video games for hours.
As video games bring children closer to reality, the impact becomes more severe. So, its time that you check your child, if they remain glued to video games for long hours and display aggressive attitude. Talk to your child or you can consult a child psychologist for better solutions. After all, it is never late to begin.
